Description
Holly Cottage is a house located on North Street in Ilminster, dating from the 17th century, with a probable extension from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of painted limestone rubble with a stone plinth and features a thatched roof that is hipped to the right, topped with a brick stack at the apex of the hip. Wrought-iron brackets support the gutter. The house has a central entry and a two-room plan, with the 19th-century extension added to the right. It stands two storeys tall, and all windows are 19th-century three-light casements with wooden lintels, positioned directly under the eaves on the first floor. The original 17th-century section of the house was symmetrical, with a window on both floors of the 19th-century extension at the far right.
Inside, there is a chamfered beam to the right of the door and an inglenook fireplace on the right end wall. A passage leading to the room on the far right has been created by reducing the width of the fireplace, with the oak lintel resting on the wall of the passage against the front wall. To the left, a cupboard-stair occupies the space. The roof structure has not been observed.
