Description
The Vicarage is a late 18th-century vicarage located in Ilminster. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, featuring Ham Hill stone coping, an eaves cornice, raised window surrounds, and a doorcase. The right side of the ground floor on the south front is rendered, likely covering a former conservatory. The building has a slate roof with brick stacks at the gable ends and follows a double-depth plan.
The south front is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window arrangement. All windows are horned 6/6-pane sashes, except for the one above the door, which lacks horns. Steps from the garden lead up to a Tuscan-style doorcase, which has an open pediment above a plain semicircular fanlight and a late 19th-century four-panel door that is glazed at the top and features heavily-reeded panels below with concave corners.
On the rear (north) facade, there is a repositioned wide left-of-centre 15th-century door with carved Gothic panels and ogee tops, set within a moulded frame. The rear also includes two small gabled dormers, three 6/6-pane sashes on the first floor, and one on the ground floor to the left, along with four tall narrow windows dating from around 1910 to the right of the door.
Inside, the vicarage features mainly late 18th-century joinery along with early and late 19th-century fireplaces. The interior of the Gothic back door is heavily planked and equipped with a large lock. Beneath the room to the right is a large cellar with a wide segmental arch leading to a vaulted ceiling, which may be brick. The rear end of the cellar is partitioned off by full-height railings with a lockable gate.
