Description
ILMINSTER
ST3614 COURT BARTON 1939-1/7/10 (East side) 23/09/50 No.1 The Vicarage
GV II
Vicarage. Late C18. Coursed limestone rubble, with Ham Hill stone coping, eaves cornice, raised window surrounds and doorcase; rendered to the right of the ground-floor of the south front, probably inside a former conservatory; slate roof with brick stacks to gable ends. Double-depth plan. The south front is 2 storeys; symmetrical 3-window range. All windows are horned 6/6-pane sashes, except that above the door, which is without horns. Steps up from the garden across a stone-paved area lead to a Tuscan-style doorcase with an open pediment above a plain semicircular fanlight and a late C19 four-panel door, glazed to the top and heavily-reeded panels below, with concave corners. The rear (north) facade has a repositioned wide left-of-centre C15 door with carved Gothic panels with ogee tops, set in a moulded frame. There are 2 small gabled dormers, three 6/6-pane sashes to the first floor and one to the ground-floor left; four c1910 tall narrow windows to the right of the door. INTERIOR: mainly late C18 joinery with early and late C19 fireplaces. The inside of the Gothic back door is heavily planked and has a great lock; below the room to the right is a large cellar with a wide segmental arch to the vaulted ceiling, which may be brick; the rear end of the cellar is partitioned off by full-height railings with a lockable gate.
