Description

The buildings to the rear of No 6 and No 10 in Market Square are believed to be the outbuildings of the former Anchor Hotel, now forming a yard called Talbot Lane. The main structure is a single range that runs southeast from the back of No 6, likely dating from the 16th century with later alterations. It is two storeys high, constructed of timber framing with red brick and grey headers, and some plaster infilling above. There is one curved brace visible on the first floor, and the building features a tiled roof with overhanging eaves and exposed rafter ends. It has six windows, all of which are casements of varying sizes, with most glazing bars intact.

To the east, slightly set back from Talbot Lane, is another half-timbered building with red brick infilling, also two storeys high, featuring one asymmetrically placed window. Further east, projecting into the lane, is No 8 Market Square, where timber framing is only visible on the west gable. The south front has been refaced with red brick and grey headers and has overhanging eaves with exposed rafter ends.

A shorter range runs east along the south side of Talbot Lane from the back of No 10. This half-timbered building has painted brick infilling and is also two storeys high, with a tiled roof and overhanging eaves with exposed rafter ends. It has three windows, a mix of casements and sashes, with missing glazing bars.

All the listed buildings in Market Square are part of a significant group, which includes the listed buildings in The Causeway and South Street.
