Description
Nos 16, 16A, 18, and 18A on South Street are buildings dating from the 16th or 17th century. They are timber-framed with a stucco finish and have a pitched slate roof. The buildings are two storeys high, with the upper floor jettied. At the north end, there is a stone party wall featuring a heavy moulded corbel at the first-floor level.
No 16 has one sash window with glazing bars on the first floor, a low shopfront below, and a low wooden arch leading to a passageway on the left, which has a chamfered segmental arch cut into the lintel. No 18 appears to be timber-framed as well, but its front is a 19th-century rebuild in red brick. It has two sash windows on the first floor and a 19th-century shopfront with fluted pilasters topped with scrolls, turned mullions, and ornate spandrels.
The rear of the buildings features two two-storey extensions; Nos 16 and 16A are red brick, while Nos 18 and 18A are colour-washed. The end elevations are made of rubble. No 18 has an exposed timber wall plate on its roof, which, like the others, is pitched with slate. No 18A is notable for its zig-zag brick stack.
Nos 16 and 16A have five ranges of segment-headed casements with glazing bars and two planked doors, along with a one-storey wash house extension that includes two planked doors and two round-arched casements with glazing bars. Nos 18 and 18A have seven ranges of casements with glazing bars, three of which are Yorkshire casements on the first floor. The west end features one range of casements with red brick voussoirs.
These buildings, along with Nos 16 to 26 (even), form a group with all the Tannery buildings.
