Description

The Royal West Sussex Hospital, designed by architect G Draper in 1825, is a notable building located at 972 Broyle Road. It is a three-storey structure with a basement, featuring a total of 19 windows and a stuccoed exterior. The ground floor is rusticated, and the building originally had only two storeys and 15 windows. The central section, which slightly projects, is adorned with Doric pilasters and a pediment, along with garlands in the frieze of the entablature. The original ends of the building also project slightly and have similar pilasters. In the late 19th century, two additional windows were added to each end, and a mansarded slate roof was introduced to create the third storey. The dormer windows are topped with rectangular pediments. There are stringcourses above the ground floor and a cornice and parapet on the original roof. A round-headed doorway is accessed by six steps, flanked by round-headed windows on the ground floor. The central projecting portion features imitation balustrading below the first-floor windows, while the remaining windows are standard sash windows. Notably, a wisteria tree on the facade was planted by the first Matron between 1825 and 1828.
