Description

The Former Church of St John the Evangelist was built between 1812 and 1813 by architect James Elmes from Oving, Sussex. This building is a notable example from before the Ecclesiological and Oxford Movement periods. It features a white brick exterior with some areas rendered and a slate roof. The structure has an elongated octagonal shape. The west front is pedimented and includes a door framed by stone pilasters and an entablature, with an arched window above set in a stone surround with eared and moulded details, and a blind balustrade beneath. There are porches at the left and right angles leading to staircases that access the galleries. The cupola resembles a miniature version of the Anoragic monument in Athens. The sides of the building have arched windows, and at the rear, there is a vestry.

Inside, the church has galleries supported by slender Egyptianate iron columns, creating a rectangular space within the octagonal design. In front of the altar, which is a modern table, stands a three-decker pulpit. The pulpit has square readers' desks, with one desk higher than the other, and the pulpit itself is circular, resting on a spirally fluted stem. Above and behind the pulpit, on the gallery, is the organ.

The church is part of a group with Nos 4 to 6 on St John's Street.
