Description

The gate piers before the Church of St John the Evangelist date from the 20th century and are listed as a significant feature. There are six gate piers in total, with low curtain walls connecting four of them, which flank the side and main entrances to the church. The two end piers stand at a height of 6½ feet, while the other four are about 5 feet high. The piers are cement rendered and feature grooved dies on low plinths. Each pier has a square cap that is pediment-shaped on each side, with a small grooved circle in every tympanum. Until the Second World War, there were iron railings and pairs of double gates as well.
