Description
The southern half of the former Corn Exchange, now occupied by John Wiley and Sons, dates from the early 19th century. It is a three-storey building with 15 bays. The southern section has been refurbished and converted into offices. The exterior features alternating bands of red brick and grey headers, with red brick voussoirs above the windows or blocked openings. The roof extends over the 4th, 7th, 10th, and 13th bays from the north, which previously housed sack hoists. The unconverted northern part consists of five bays, where wooden boarded doors are present on all floors. On the first and second floors, all bays except the 4th have small windows or blocked openings set in segmental arches. The ground floor includes some round-headed openings, which contain windows or blocked openings, with a string course at the impost level. The southern converted section has a tiled hipped roof. On the first and second floors, the 7th, 10th, and 13th bays feature modern windows in segmental arches that match the width of the former openings. In other bays, original openings have been widened to fit modern three-light windows in segmental arches. The ground floor also has round-headed windows similar to the originals, all containing windows except for the bay with the doorway, which features a fine panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight above.
