Description
Early 19th century terraced cottages are located on the north side of Tarrant Street. The cottages are constructed of beach flint with brick dressings, although numbers 56, 60, and 62 are rendered and number 58 is whitewashed. The roofs are pitched tile, with number 56 featuring a gambrel roof and number 62 a half-hipped roof. Brick chimneys are present. The cottages are two storeys and have attics. A brick modillion eaves cornice runs along the buildings, though it is rendered over at number 62. Each cottage originally contained a range of double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, however, number 58 has a plate glass window on the ground floor and a casement window on the first floor, and number 62 has an oblong bay window, formerly a shop window, with glazing bars, surmounted by a frieze and moulded cornice that extends to the west over the door. Numbers 56 and 60 have single planked doors with semi-circular fanlights above, each with a single ashlar step leading up. Numbers 60 and 62 also have partly glazed doors with oblong fanlights above; number 60's fanlight has glazing bars, while number 62 has a segment-headed, partly glazed door. Each of numbers 56, 58, and 62 has an attic dormer, with number 62's dormer containing a double-hung sash window with glazing bars, and the others featuring casement windows with glazing bars. Numbers 36 to 64 (even) and 70 to 74 (even) form a group with numbers 83, 85, and 91 to 101 (odd).
