Description
Chiddingfold War Memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary, which is a Grade I-listed building. The memorial is made of limestone and features a wheel-headed cross atop a tall, tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft rises from a square plinth that sits on a three-stepped base. The dedications and names of the fallen are incised into the plinth and the steps.
The dedication for the First World War is on the front face of the plinth and reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The names of 45 individuals who died are inscribed on the other sides of the plinth. On the top step, there is a dedication for the Second World War that states: "ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE OTHERS OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED FOR FREEDOM AND OUR COUNTRY 1939 – 1945," which includes 14 names.
