Description
Field Place is a house that dates from the 16th century on the right, with 17th century and early 19th century extensions to the left, and 20th century wings at the rear. The right side features a timber frame on a rendered plinth, with whitewashed brick cladding below and fishscale tile hanging above. It has a plain-tiled roof with a half-hip at the right end. The left half has a sandstone block plinth and red and blue chequerwork brick cladding, topped with a plain tiled roof that steps up to the left.
The left side is two storeys high, featuring a plat band above the ground floor, diagonal brick dentils at the eaves, and tile-hung gables. There is an offset crow-stepped stack at the left end, decorated with brick dentils and galleted sandstone blocks. Each floor has two 12-pane glazing bar sash windows under gauged brick heads. The older right side is one storey with attics beneath a two-hipped roof, featuring leaded casement dormers on either side of a gabled 19th century blocked dormer. The first floor has two 3-light metal casement windows, while the ground floor has two 4-light leaded windows.
A central door leads to a lobby entry, which is topped by a fine massive corbelled and multiple stack. There is a catslide extension at the right end. The left-hand return front has a buttressed angle and a basement storey, with a half-glazed door beneath a flat hood and two windows at right angles to the rear. The house is set in a garden of some historic interest.
