Description
Colgate's Barn is a 18th-century barn with 19th-century alterations and additions. It features a weather-boarded timber frame set on a stone plinth, topped with a corrugated iron roof. Originally, the barn had three bays with a front aisle, which has since been removed. A bay with a front aisle has been added to the right, along with a rear lean-to that has a less steeply-pitched roof. Much of the weatherboarding has been replaced, and there are waggon doors on both sides of the second bay.
Inside, the framing is complete and includes posts, plates, studs, braces, and Queen-post roof trusses with staggered butt purlins and rafters. The absence of a midrail and the later cross-brace infill at the front of the 18th-century bays indicate where the former aisle was located.
