Description

Beam Cottage, Forge Cottage, and Oak Cottage are a group of historic buildings located on the north side of High Street in Oxted. This hall house dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th century, a cross wing added in the 17th century, and further remodeling in the 18th and 19th centuries. The structure is timber framed and clad in red and blue brick, topped with a plain tiled roof that is half hipped to the right.

The building features an end stack to the right and a ridge stack positioned to the right of center, with additional stacks on the left and rear left. It stands two stories tall, with two framed bays on the right and a three-bay gable front cross wing on the left. A brick plat band runs above the ground floor, and there are four leaded casement windows on the first floor, along with plain casements in the first floor of the cross wing. The entrance to Beam Cottage (No. 56) is a planked door located to the right of center, partially glazed and sheltered by a flat porch hood supported by brackets. Oak Cottage (No. 58) features a six-panel door to the left of center, while Forge House (No. 60) has a glazed door on the left-hand return front. The rear of the building displays exposed framing.

Inside Beam Cottage, there is a fine stop-chamfered ceiling frame on the ground floor, and a foliage carved dais beam has been repurposed as a wooden lintel for a deep brick fireplace. The main beam features a 17th-century corbel carving, and there is a moulded crown post in the roof.
