Description

Beacon Hill Farmhouse, formerly known as Beacon Hill Farmhouse and Cottage, is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of red brick, primarily in English bond, and features a hipped and slated roof. The building has a T-plan and stands two storeys tall. The southwest wing has two windows, which are flush cased sashes with segment-headed arches on the ground floor and straight tops on the first floor, each containing 12 panes with glazing bars. One of these windows has been blocked and painted over.

The southeast front of the main block has a range of four windows and a central door that is sheltered by a flat-topped brick porch with a round-headed arch. The first floor has three segment-headed sash windows, also with flush frames and 12 panes each. There are large external stacks at both the northeast and southwest ends of the house, and the rear of the main block features a large external stack as well.

Inside, timber framing is visible within the cross-wing, which may have originally served as a stair tower. This cross-wing is believed to contain several small rooms and subdivisions, indicating it is the earlier of the two blocks. Records from the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England note that the cross-wing has two windows with chamfered jowls and mullions. Additionally, the house includes two rooms with original panelling and round-headed doorways that have moulded imposts and architraves. The eastern room features a round-headed recess with pilasters and an architrave.

There is a barn immediately to the southwest of the farmhouse, which is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a half-hipped peg-tiled roof. This barn may also be eligible for listing, although it has not been examined. Beacon Hill Farmhouse is part of a group with Beacon Hill Farm Cottage.
