Description

Little Beacon Hill Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1600 and the 18th century. It features a timber-framed structure with pebble dash and a peg-tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range of sash windows, some of which are horned. There is a central 20th-century gabled brick porch. The west gable has a prominent chimney stack, with a smaller stack to the east. The layout includes a gabled cross-wing from the 1600s on the west side and an 18th-century block on the east, which was largely rebuilt after being bombed during the Second World War. A stair tower from around 1600 connects the two blocks and rises from the original main range.

Inside, the farmhouse features lamb's tongue stops on the principal and bridging joists of the ground floor ceiling. The double ovolo moulding of the plaster surround of a four-centred arched fireplace was restored in the 20th century, with roses added in the spandrels. There is a shaped newel post at the top of the tower stair and two shadow planed boarded doors on the first floor. The front upper chamber of the cross-wing has an original framed closet that projects from the flank wall next to the stack, which may have been used as a garderobe. The framing of the cross-wing is reinforced by exterior tension braces on the 'prick post' at the rear. There is a 20th-century extension to the rear that projects to the east and features casement windows. Little Beacon Hill Farmhouse is part of a group that includes the nearby barn.
