Description

The Old Bell Inn is a Grade II* listed inn, originally built in the 16th century with additions from the 17th century, extensions from the 19th century, and restoration in the 20th century. It features a timber frame set on a brick and rubblestone plinth, with rendered infill on the street front and whitewashed brick infill along the left-hand (west) return front. The roof is plain tiled, with a ridge stack at the rear left, a front stack to the left of center, and a rear ridge stack to the right. The building has a T-shaped plan with a cross wing to the left, standing two storeys high with an attic in the gable front to the left. The street front has three framed bays to the left and a one-bay extension to the right, with three framed bays to the west. The first floor jetties out, supported by a moulded dragon-post at the left corner. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring leaded casements on the left and sash windows across the first floor to the right. There is a planked and part-glazed door to the left on the return front, accessed by a flight of eight steps, and a similar door at the left end. A 19th-century square porch is located to the left of center on the street front, with planked doors on the right side.

Inside, extensive framing is visible, particularly on the ground floor, although much of it has been restored. There is a two-bay chamber to the south with an open truss and a chamfered crown-post, along with a gallery on the northeast side.
