Description

The Drum and Monkey House and Cottage is a house, formerly an alehouse, that dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with extensions and alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. It features a timber frame with exposed large panel framing and arched braces, and has been extended with timber framing clad in weatherboarding. The roofs are plain tiled.

This hall house consists of four framed bays and a cross wing. It stands two storeys high with a hipped roof that has gablets, and there are stacks located at the rear left and centre left, with a crenellated crown and a projecting stack at the end right. The half-hipped cross wing projects to the left.

On the first floor of the cross wing, there is a three-light casement, with two single lights below it. The main block features a central projecting and gabled two-storey bay window, which was reconstructed in the 20th century except for the gable. There are also two two-light wooden casements on the first floor and a three-light casement to the right on the ground floor. The end right has a rib and stud door, while the centre left has an early board and stud door, with the doorcase made of durns.

The left return has regular fenestration with three wooden casements on each floor and a central raking porch with a door on the right side. At the rear, there is a catslide outshot on a stone base.

Inside, the open hall was reopened in the late 20th century, featuring a crown post on a chamfered tie beam and arch-braced crown post trusses. There are large inglenook fireplaces, and a king post is reported in the upper chamber, although it was not seen during the inspection.
