Description

The Sunbury War Memorial is a First World War memorial, with an addition for the Second World War, unveiled in 1920. It is made of Portland stone, incorporating marble on the plinth, and stands on a York stone base.

Located on the west side of Green Street, in front of recreation grounds established in the early 20th century, the memorial features a cross with a square plinth, rising from an octagonal base with two steps. The cross has capped arms and a carved crusader sword on the front, with the blade extending down the top of the slightly tapered shaft. The shaft has a break at the tip, and the lower half features shallow fielded panels. The square base of the shaft is adorned with a moulded laurel wreath on each face. The plinth is detailed with a moulded dentil cornice and a stepped, ogee moulded base, with each side displaying an inscribed marble panel and angle pilasters decorated with moulded palm fronds.

The front face of the memorial is inscribed with a tribute to the Sunbury men who served during the First World War, detailing their sacrifices. Below this inscription is a table commemorating those who fell in the Second World War and subsequent engagements. The other three faces of the memorial display plaques inscribed with the names of the fallen, listed by surname, followed by their initials and rank.
