Description
Claines War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone.
The memorial features a modified version of Blomfield’s Cross of Sacrifice, which includes a tall Latin cross with a bronze carving of a downward pointing sword. This cross is set into an octagonal plinth. On the front (south-east) face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "TO / THE MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN / THE GREAT WAR / MDCCCCXIV / MDCCCCXVIII / ALSO WORLD WAR / 1939-1945." The north-west face has a second inscription that states: "SEE YE TO IT / THAT THESE / SHALL NOT / HAVE DIED / IN VAIN." The other sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names of those who fell. The plinth is supported by a base with a capping stone and stands on three octagonal steps.
