Description

The Mug House Inn is a public house with origins dating back to the 16th century or earlier. It may have been rebuilt and underwent alterations and expansions during the mid-19th century, with further remodeling in the mid-20th century. The building features part timber framing with mid to late 20th-century brick infill and replacement walling, a brick structure, and a plain tiled roof with three brick stacks along the main ridge. It consists of three framed bays and is two storeys high.

The framing is irregular, primarily consisting of four square panels from the sill to the wall-plate. A cruck truss is incorporated into the wall-frame of the front right bay, while a swept brace is found in the lower corner of the left gable end. The gable above features a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts.

On the front elevation facing northeast, the ground floor includes a three-light and a four-light casement window, along with three two-light casements on the first floor. There is also a central five-panel door, all of which are flush-beaded and topped with a gabled canopy supported by brackets.

The interior has been significantly altered. A parallel mid-19th-century range extends to the rear and is two storeys high, featuring a dentilled eaves cornice. At its southeast gable end, there is a single framed bay that is a single storey and lower in height. This bay has two square panels from the sill to the wall-plate, a short straight brace in the upper corners of the front wall-frame, and a collar and tie-beam truss with queen struts at its gable end. In the angle with the main range, there is a ledged and battened door.
