Barn Approximately 60 Metres To North West Of Hartswood Manor

This is a barn located approximately 60 metres to the north-west of Hartswood Manor. It dates from the 17th century and has later additions. The barn features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding and a slate roof, presenting an L-shaped plan that includes a 5-bay main barn and a 2-bay addition on the eastern side at the north end. There are opposing central cart entries to the main barn and another entry to the eastern bay of the addition.

The large-scantling framing is almost intact, resting on a rubble and brick plinth. It includes jowelled posts on a sole plate with a mid-rail, wall plate, and straight braces to tiebeams, with some braces also to the mid-rail. The roof structure consists of queen strut roof trusses that clasp purlins, although some rafters have been replaced and some wind braces are present. The roof of the addition is butted against the main barn roof, and the posts of the party wall have been modified for access. The addition features two central trusses, one with queen struts and the other with queen posts.

At the time of inspection, the barn was in a state of dereliction. There is a brick addition with an adjoining range to the east, as well as adjacent buildings to the north-west and south-east, which are not of special interest.
