Description

A Dutch barn, dating from around 1830, located on Hartswood Farm. This five-bay barn is timber-framed and open on three sides, with the south side being the only enclosed elevation. The south side features a frame of staggered midrails and diagonal braces, clad in elm weatherboarding. The roof is hipped and covered in slate. The barn has a softwood frame with through purlins, collar beams, and a ridge piece. The western posts have diagonal struts to the upright posts, while the eastern posts have bolted knees. There are bolted foot braces. Rafters and collar braces have been replaced. Dutch barns originated in the late 18th century, arising from the industrialization of agriculture and the inadequacy of traditional hay ricks for hay storage. The barn is included on the list as a rare example of this building type.
