Description

This is a barn located to the east of Dover's Farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century and incorporating the former end of a 16th-century barn. It was altered around 1973. The barn features a timber frame with weatherboarding added in 1973, resting on a plinth made of brick and some sandstone rubble, and has a plain tile roof. It consists of a four-bay 17th-century barn connected by a one-bay section to the truncated end of the 16th-century barn on the right.

There is a cart-entry in bay three, which has the outer posts of the original cart door fixed in place, with double board doors from 1973 hung from them. The former opposing cart door at the rear is boarded across. On the left side, there is a double cart door on the right.

Inside, the 17th-century barn has large, unjowelled wall-posts with long braces to the tie-beams; the posts flanking the cart-entry are arched, while the others are straight. It features four collared queen-post roof trusses with staggered butt purlins, long raking wind braces, and old rafters. The right-hand bay from the 16th century has large, jowelled wall-posts with arched braces to the wall-plate and added straight braces to the tie-beam, which replaced the former arched braces. There are mortices in the soffit of the tie-beam from the previous end wall. The right-hand end wall is made of brick with vertical boarding in the gable. There is a late 20th-century shelter attached to the rear, and a brick addition from around 1900 attached to the right, which are not included in the listing.
