Description

The War Memorial Lych Gate at Emmanuel Church in Sidlow was unveiled in 1921. It is a timber lych gate featuring Portland stone plinths and seats, a tiled roof, and an internal brass plaque.

The lych gate has a wide hipped, tiled roof supported by a strong timber frame that stands on square stone plinths at each side of the entrance. The roof includes triangular high-set gablets on the north and south sides, which are mirrored on the east and west. Each gablet has a recessed trefoil opening with a cusped timber frame. At the top of the roof is a central finial spire with arms extending outward from the cardinal points.

The timber frame consists of four principal posts on each plinth, with four-way arched bracing to the wall plate. The frame rests on two Portland stone plinths that extend into the street, incorporating benches beneath the canopy. The west face of the north bench is inscribed with the year 1914, while the south bench is inscribed with 1918. Timber gates are located to the north and south of each plinth. A brass plaque attached to a beam in the roof reads:

THIS LYCH GATE WAS ERECTED BY GEORGE HENRY LINDSEY-RENTON OF DOVERS/ AS A THANKOFFERING TO ALMIGHTY GOD FOR THE PRESERVATION OF MEMBERS OF HIS FAMILY/ WHILE SERVING ON THE WESTERN FRONT IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/ AND AS A MEMORIAL TO THOSE OF THIS PARISH WHO DIED IN THE DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY.

After 2015, the east face of the south bench was inscribed with the date 1939, and the east face of the north bench was inscribed with 1945.
