Description
The War Memorial Lych Gate at the Church of St Andrew in Gatton Park was unveiled in 1921. It features a timber structure with stone plinths and flanking walls, topped by a slate roof.
The lych gate stands on stone plinths at each side of the entrance and has a steep gabled slate roof with oversailing eaves and sculpted bargeboards. Its pegged frame includes a principal post on each plinth, with upward braces connecting to the roof plate on the north and south sides, and downward bracing to the sole plate on three sides.
The walkway is covered by four-centred arches, and above this is an elaborate timber-framed superstructure that is heavily braced, with some braces shaped. The north elevation features a dentilled collar with a timber cross, and the exterior arch on this side is inscribed with the years 1914-1918. Inside, the western side lists the names of five individuals from the parish who lost their lives, while the eastern side bears the inscription:
"TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN THE MEMORY OF THE/ GALLANT MEN OF GATTON WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1918."
