Description

Gatton Hall, located in Gatton Park, was built or rebuilt by the Fifth Baron Monson between 1830 and 1841. It originally featured the celebrated Marble Hall, which was designed for Charles IV of Spain and purchased by Lord Monson in Rome in 1830 for £10,000. In 1891, Sir Jeremiah Colman added a large Corinthian portico to the north side of the house. Unfortunately, the building was gutted by fire in 1934, leaving only the portico and the extreme west end of the servants' wing intact. The house was then rebuilt in a neo-Georgian style, but it is primarily noted for its portico, which is a prostyle hexastyle Corinthian portico that embraces the projecting center bay of the house. It features two columns on either side and connects to the side wings, which also have Corinthian Order with flat pilasters. There is no stylobate, as the path runs through the portico. The design includes a modillioned and dentilled cornice and a pediment.
