Description

The viaduct at Gatton Park is a dry bridge that is known to have existed in 1780 and is possibly one of the improvements made by Capability Brown, who created the lake between 1761 and 1774. It features a triumphal arch constructed from Gatton stone at the base, with tooled ashlar on the southwest side and stone rubble on the northeast side. Above the arch, there is a stone niche with brick heads, and the top of the arch is made of brick. The approaches to the viaduct are supported by Gatton stone retaining walls.
