Description
Gatton Town Hall is a late 18th-century building that served as the town hall for the Rotten Borough of Gatton. It features a small square ornamental garden temple supported by six Tuscan columns, with a triglyph frieze and a pediment set on a stone pavement. Four columns are positioned on the side facing the large house, while the rear has only two columns for economic reasons. This is where the few electors of Gatton cast their votes to elect two members of Parliament until they were disenfranchised by the 1832 Reform Act. Behind the Town Hall stands a stone urn, inscribed "in memory of the deceased Borough," which is dated 1765. The urn is adorned with serpents entwined on a deep moulded plinth with wreathed roundels. The inscriptions on the urn include "COMITIUM GATTONIENSE MDCCLXV" on the side nearest the Town Hall, "SALUS POPULI SUPREMA LEX ESTO" to the left, "STAT DUCTIS SORTIBUS URNA" at the rear, and "H M DOLUS MALUS ABESTO" to the right.
