Description

The kitchen garden wall and potting shed date to around 1765-1768, built for Reverend John Tattersall, although it may be slightly earlier. A potting shed was added in the early 19th century, with 20th-century alterations and repairs. The wall, constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a brick coping, encloses a broadly rectangular area of 2.26 acres. A curved section of wall at the north-east corner accommodates an access road. Square brick piers mark the corners. The wall has openings in the north, west, and south sides, and a brick-arched opening on the east side. The wall’s height has been reduced at the south end of the west side (partially rebuilt in 2023) and along the eastern half of the south side, where it is now half its original height. Buildings have been built into the external face of the eastern and western sides, and brick buttresses support the external face in places. Two small garden enclosures are located at the north-east and north-west corners; the north-west enclosure wall only partially survives and forms the rear wall of late 20th-century lean-to buildings. The enclosed garden at the north-east corner incorporates a lean-to potting shed with an eight-pane window, a boarded door, and a slate roof. The former gardeners’ cottage, located on the north side of the wall, is not included in this listing.
