Description
The kitchen garden walls at Bridge End Gardens in Saffron Walden date from 1840 and are designated as a Grade II listed structure. The walls enclose the old kitchen garden on three sides, forming the northern boundary wall. The two lengths of the wall run southeast to northwest, each measuring 50 meters, and are connected by a 73-meter length running southwest to northeast. The walls stand 3.07 meters high and are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with some burnt bricks included in the northwest wall.
The exterior features pilaster buttresses, while the southwest wall has a brick semicircular coping with a lower side roll and cavetto on each side. There is a simple wide gateway with plain brick piers and an adjacent pedestrian doorway, both currently fitted with 20th-century board and battened doors. The ground rises to the northwest, causing the wall to be shaped upwards at that end. The northwest wall has a plain brick coping with square set brick dentils, and a date plaque is centrally located on the internal face.
The northeast end of the wall has some 20th-century rebuilding, including an internal ramped buttress, while the southwest end features a 20th-century red brick lean-to shed in the internal angle with the southwest wall, topped with a corrugated asbestos cement roof and a boarded and battened door. The northeast wall is similar to the northwest wall but has brick dentils set diagonally and is shaped down four times to accommodate the slope of the hill. At the southern end, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed Fletton brick shed within the garden.
