Description
The wall running northeast from the center of the southwest side of the gardens in Saffron Walden was built in 1797 and rebuilt in 1839 and 1840. It is made of red brick, approximately 3 meters high and 45 meters long, featuring piers and buttresses. The wall is constructed in Flemish bond, merging with header bond in the upper courses. The section to the southwest has been considerably rebuilt in a plain style and restored, including a round arched opening with panelled jambs. In the center, the wall rises over a segmental arched opening that has a Coade stone keystone featuring a moulded female head, inscribed on the soffit with "Coade, London 1794." From this arch to the northeast, the wall is largely intact, showcasing roll moulded brick coping and piers topped with stone caps, each side of the archway adorned with ball finials.
