Description
The gates and steps at the north corner of the gardens at Bridge End in Saffron Walden are an ornamental feature dating from 1840. The gate piers are made of red brick and topped with stone cornices and ball finials, along with a central pilaster that has an inverted stone console at the top. The gateway is approached by stone steps, although the previously recorded stone-carved griffins are no longer present. The gates are supported by inner wrought-iron decorative piers that are linked by swept railings to the outer brick piers. The iron piers and the cresting of the gateway are designed in a 'Jacobean' strapwork style, while the gate leaves feature a more elaborate scroll and foliage decoration.
