Description

28 Bridge Street is a house located in Saffron Walden, originally built in the 16th century and later restored in the early 20th century with a rear addition. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a peg-tiled roof and has a rectangular plan.

The front (west) elevation features a continuous jetty with bold projecting panels of combed pargetting from the 20th century, although the jetty details are not exposed. There are two windows on the ground floor, with a passageway leading to the rear that includes a simple boarded door with an overlight. Inside the passage, there is a modern street door with two upper glazed panels and a boarded lower panel. The street elevation also has a blocked boarded house door and a nearby 20th-century window, which is a two-light casement with a central stile and glazing bars, consisting of four panes by three panes. There is a second similar blocked door and window. On the first floor, there are two modern casement windows with glazing bars; one is a two-light window with four panes by three panes, and the other is a three-light window with six panes by three panes. A central stack is located behind the roof apex.

The rear (east) elevation features a two-storey, flat-roofed addition that is rendered with sponge decoration and includes details from the 20th century. The ground floor has two windows arranged north-south, with a passageway to the street that contains a four-panelled door with glazed upper panels and an adjacent single-light casement window. There is also a large three-light picture window with glazing bars, consisting of three panes by three panes. On the first floor, there are two similar two-light casement windows with glazing bars, each with four panes by three panes.
