Description

The War Memorial Lych Gate to the Church of St Peter in Woodmansterne is a vernacular-style structure erected in 1919 and dedicated in January 1920.

It is constructed with a timber frame and features a shingled roof resting on a flint base, which is topped with stone coping and quoins. The gate has a gabled arch with pentices at both the front and rear.

On the north-west side facing the street, there is a louvred gable supported by a central post and side tension braces, with the left brace inscribed with the date 1914 and the right with 1918. The plain wooden barge boards are adorned with a carved finial and pendant, while the corner posts have diagonal tension braces on wooden corbels. The south-east side facing the church is similar but does not have any inscriptions.

Both sides of the lych gate feature trefoil-arched openings above panels filled with planks.

Inside, there are bronze panels attached to the side walls with inscriptions. The east side panel commemorates the men of the parish who died in the First World War (1914-1918), stating: "WOODMANSTERNE MEMORIAL THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY," followed by their names and the phrase "REQUIESCANT IN PACE." The west side panel honors those who served in the Second World War (1939-1945) with a similar inscription, listing the names of the men from the parish who gave their lives, along with additional names on two side panels.
