Description
This barn, located about 8 metres south-east of Hush Heath Manor, dates back to the 17th century. It features a timber frame clad with weatherboarding and has a red and grey brick plinth in Flemish bond, with a stone plinth on the left (east) gable end. The structure consists of five timber-framed bays, a rear (south) aisle, and a central midstrey. The roof is hipped to the right and gabled to the left, projecting by one rafter couple beyond the gable-end wall. The purlins extend further, supported by a short tie-beam that carries a hipped plain-tile hoist-hood. Long raked braces connect the projecting wall-plate ends to the purlins.
At the front, there are central full-height double doors. The rear porch rises from the aisle and features banded red and grey tile-hanging on the sides, a hipped plain-tile roof that jetties forward on straight braces, and full-height double doors. A lean-to is attached to the right gable end.
Inside, the barn has shaped jowls on the chamfered principal posts. The roof includes a clasped purl with diminishing principal rafters and almost straight windbraces, though some of these have been replaced in two right bays after a fire. The aisle has raked queen posts clasping the purlin. The aisle is partly separated from the rest of the barn by midrails between the principal (or arcade) posts, with studs below and tension braces above. The barn exhibits similar framing throughout, with threshing floor braces on either side of the midstrey. The hoist hood is a relatively unusual feature in this area.
