Description
This is a 17th-century barn located 30 meters south of Holtsmere End Farm. The barn features a timber frame resting on a red brick sill, with dark weatherboarding and steeply pitched roofs now covered in corrugated asbestos. It has a tall, four-bay structure facing north, with a projecting gabled porch at the second bay from the west. The western end bay has been altered to include a lean-to roof. There are opposed double doors at the porch bay. The barn includes step-jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, and mid-height rails that are jointed in-line. Straight braces support the tie beams, and there is a high collar with an inclined brace across the lower angles of each truss. Each roof slope has two purlins, with the upper purlin clasped by the collar and the lower butt-jointed to the principal. The rafters are jointed into the lower purlin but extend continuously over the upper one. The wallplate features a squint-butted scarf joint.
