Description

This barn, located to the east of the house at Little Lovetts End Farm, dates to the later 17th century. It is a timber-frame structure with a low brick sill and dark weatherboarding, covered by a steep-pitched roof that is now gap-slated. The barn has four bays facing south, with a swept roof to a projecting porch in the second bay from the east, and a rear winnowing door. The structure features bull-nose jowled posts with straight braces to the tie-beams. The roof is constructed with a single purlin to each slope, incorporating inclined straight queen-posts (without collars). Long, curved wind braces extend from each gable end to the purlin. A mid-height rail is tenoned in-line within the walls, and at a higher level in the gable walls. Numbered joints are present throughout, along with squint-butted scarf joints in the wallplates and purlins.
