Description
This is a barn located immediately northwest of Heath Farm, dating from the mid-16th century with an 18th-century addition to the south, creating a single long structure. The barn is timber framed, partially weatherboarded and partially clad in corrugated iron, sitting on a plinth made of flint and brick. The roof is covered with corrugated iron. There is a small 19th-century flint addition to the south.
Inside the 16th-century section, there are six bays featuring jowled main posts, a mid rail, and largely intact heavy studding. There is evidence of wall bracing at the corners, which has been removed. The original tie beam braces have all been replaced with knee braces. A cart entry is located in the third bay from the north, which was originally only on the west side. The barn has a brick threshing floor, and the roof includes butt and clasped purlins, with most of the latter being renewed, along with some rafters. A ridge piece is present, and there are later queen struts supporting the lower row of purlins. Evidence of missing wind bracing can also be found.
The 18th-century addition consists of four bays with an intact frame, and the north gable end separates it from the 16th-century section. This substantial frame features full-height studding and straight primary braces. A cart entry is situated in the second bay from the south. The tie beams in this section have original knee braces, except for the two flanking the cart entry bay, which are arched-braced on one side. The roof has two rows of stepped butt purlins and a ridge piece.
