Description
Drift Cottages is a group of three cottages dating from the late 16th century and late 17th century. They are two storeys high and have an L-shaped form. The cottages are timber-framed and plastered, featuring simple comb-patterned pargetting. The roofs are hipped and covered with black glazed pantiles. The cottages have 20th-century small-paned casement windows, with three-light and two-light designs, as well as half-glazed doors. There are also plank doors leading to the side range.
Cottages 2 and 3 are positioned sideways to the road and represent the oldest part of the group, designed with a basic two-cell lobby-entrance plan. The internal chimney stack has a plain shaft that has been rebuilt in white brick. In Cottage 2, the main ground storey beam features ovolo-moulding and a stop with a jewel and groove, while in Cottage 3, the main beam has a 3-inch chamfer and run-off stops.
In the early 19th century, the roof of this range was raised to match the higher roof of Cottage 1, which showcases high-quality late 17th-century framing with primary braces and bisected studs. The main ground-storey beam in Cottage 1 also has a chamfer and identical stops to those found in Cottage 2. This type of 17th-century stop is commonly seen in Coney Weston.
