Description
The barn at Sparrow Hall is a 17th-century aisled barn located within a small farmstead group. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a clay pantiled roof. The structure consists of six bays, with a later cart entry added in the third bay from the west. The roof spans six bays, matching the frame's bays, featuring diminished principals that are deeper but not wider than the common rafters. It has clasped purlins and slightly cambered collars on the trusses, along with shallow windbraces and an intermediate collar in each bay, topped with a deep, narrow ridge piece. The rafters over the aisles have been renewed.
The main posts have long shallow jowls, with slightly arched braces connecting to the arcade plates and tie-beams. All components are pegged, though some have later bolting added. The arcade posts rest on low dwarf walls and are connected to the aisles with side-ties and diagonal struts to the aisle rafters. A few smaller components within the structure are reused. The two end walls feature thin bisected studs and long primary braces, which may date from a later period than the rest of the frame.
