Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a collegiate church, now serving as a parish church, dating from 1342 with 16th-century alterations. It is constructed from flint with ashlar quotas and dressings, topped with a thatched roof. The transepts and chancel were removed in 1542. The church features a tall west tower with diagonal buttresses that have three set-offs, and a full-height stair turret on the south side. The first stage of the tower includes punched encircled quatrefoils, while the west face has two deeply recessed trefoiled lancets. A string course runs around the belfry, which has two-light Y traceried windows with foiled mouchettes, and a plain parapet. The roofline to the east indicates reconstruction in 1575 by Robert Buston. Many putlock holes are visible on the tower and throughout the church fabric.

The north nave wall has four bell-based buttresses that contain tall windows with continuous mouldings above the string course. The window heads were removed in the 16th century, and paired brick lancets were inserted. The north door, located in the second bay, features undercut continuous mouldings. Remains of piers and moulded capitals from the north transept are still present. The 20th-century apsed chancel has three timber-framed lancets, and remnants of the chancel foundations extend to the east, while the chancel arch piers and moulded capitals from the mid-14th century remain in place. The south aisle mirrors the north. A 19th-century vestry occupies the position of the original south transept. The original two-storey porch has been rebuilt as a single structure with flushwork and inscribed panels, and the lower half of the brick staircase to the upper chamber dates back to 1342. The interior has been largely remodelled in the 19th century, but large wall arches from the 14th century, along with the transept and chancel arch piers, still exist. The wall dado is panelled.
