Description
The barn and cottage at Ruckman's Farm date back to the 17th century and were extended around 1894 to 1895 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The barn features a timber frame, with the frame exposed on the southwest corner, brick infilling, and weatherboard cladding on the rest of the structure. The extensions are made of painted brick, with some tile hanging on the gables of the cottage. The roofs are plain tiled. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the barn located to the south and a later wing running at right angles to the rear, which houses the cottage at the end.
On the south side of the barn, there are four diamond-pane leaded casement windows and a pentice extension to the west. The left gable end has an exposed Queen-strut roof, a loft door on the first floor, and a louvred opening above. The north side of the barn features sliding doors in the center and another door to the right. The wing to the north has an open recess on the west side facing the lane. The cottage to the left has a square corbelled stack and a front gable, with a 6-light leaded window in the gable. There is a catslide roof across the ground floor on the left, and a flat-roofed projection on the right with a leaded window and part-glazed door. The east elevation (rear) of the cottage is tile hung and includes a dormer window. This building is included for its group value.
