Description

The Stores is a house and former shop located in Abinger, Oakwood Hill, dating from the 16th century with extensions from the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame clad in blue and brown brick on a sandstone rubble plinth, with tile hanging above that includes alternating bands of diamond-point and fishscale tiling. The building has plain tiled roofs and stands two storeys high, with brick stacks positioned to the left of the centre gable, on the ridge of the right-hand gable, and at the rear.

The front has a triple gable end with one 20th-century leaded casement window in each gable, and three-light leaded windows in the outer gables on the ground floor. There is a three-light shop window to the left of the centre, which has a drop shutter, and a door located in the centre gable. The right-hand return front features one first-floor window and two ground-floor windows, along with two doors under flat hoods. A good offset stack is found at the right end.

At the rear, the frame is exposed on the right-hand range, with brick and wattle infilling. There is a blocked window with ovolo mullions on the first floor to the left. Inside, substantial quantities of good quality framing are exposed, along with a deep brick fireplace at the rear on the ground floor and a blocked mullioned window. The house has seen very little alteration since the early 20th century.
