Description
Royal Oak Cottage is an 18th-century house located on the south side of Church Street, Charlbury. It was formerly known as the Old Royal Oak. The house is constructed of coursed squared rubble with timber lintels and has a stone slate roof, with two gable-end chimneys built of brick. The property is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-window front. A large ground-floor bay window, featuring four raised and fielded panels and two lights, is positioned to the left of the front door. This window is protected by a late 19th-century wooden porch supported by wooden uprights on low stone walls. A four-light mullioned and transomed window is to the right of the door, and similar two-light windows are situated on the first floor. Three rendered dormers incorporate iron-framed casements with leaded lights. While the interior was not inspected, it is noted to contain a fine stone-arched open fireplace. The building was formerly used as a temperance inn.
