Description

No. 96 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and dwelling. It dates from the mid-16th century and was refronted in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, partly timber-framed, and has a stuccoed front. The roof is gabled with stone slate on the front and artificial stone slates on the rear, featuring a left end stack made of stone finished in brick. The structure has an L-plan with a rear left wing and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range.

To the right, there is an outshut projection that includes a two-light window with glazing bars above a 20th-century three-light window. The left range, which has rusticated pilaster strips, features mid-19th century two-pane sash windows set in moulded architraves above a canted shop front with 20th-century doors. The early to mid-16th century rear range is made of roughcast timber framing that jetties over a limestone rubble ground floor and has a gabled roof covered with artificial stone slates.

Inside, the building has quartered chamfered beams and a mid-16th century fireplace with a hollow-chamfered corbelled lintel. The roof structure from the 16th century includes collar trusses with through purlins and a ridge purlin that is notched into blades halved at the ridge.
