Description

Cromwell House and The Old Forge are two houses, part of which was formerly used as a forge. They date from the 17th century to early 18th century and have been altered. The buildings are constructed of coursed rubble limestone with rough quoins and feature a slate roof with flanking brick chimneys. They are two storeys high and consist of five bays. The windows are wooden casements with two and three lights, horizontal glazing bars, and ovolo-moulded wooden lintels, although most of the casements were renewed in the 20th century. The ground floor left bays have 20th-century transomed windows, with the second bay featuring a canted bay window. There is a 20th-century door between the left bays, topped with a gabled wooden hood, and a 20th-century glazed door to the right with an ovolo-moulded wooden lintel. There are traces of other blocked openings. A later rear wing forms an L-plan and has large 20th-century wooden casements and garage openings. Inside, the left bay has heavy stop-chamfered spine beams on the ground and first floors, slightly chamfered joists, and a shaped stairwell with renewed wooden winders aligned with the stack. The roof features double butt purlins on trusses with tie beams and collars, one of which has a wattle and daub partition.
