Description
Cromwell's House, located on Mercer Row, is a late medieval, three-storey timber-framed building that features jettied first and second floors at both the front and back. The house has a steeply pitched modern tiled roof and a central chimney stack with multiple flues. The first floor is covered in plaster, and the central section projects in line with the roughcast second floor. The ground floor includes two shop fronts; the right side retains the form of a late 18th-century bow but has modern glazing, while the left-hand shop window dates from the 19th century. The top floor has three windows with moulded architraves, one of which has glazing bars. A moulded wood eaves cornice runs along the top. On the first floor, there are two canted oriel windows, both with three lights, and the right one features glazing bars. The central section projects and has one window with a moulded architrave. A passageway runs through the centre of the ground floor, and within one of the arches, there are three large sections of early moulded brick. The building is noted for its rarity in Louth and its relationship with the church. Cromwell's House forms a group with Nos 1A, 23, and 25 Upgate.
