Description
The Stables are late 17th-century stables that have been converted into outbuildings and studios, with some alterations possibly made in the 18th century and partial conversion in the 20th century. The building is constructed from squared coursed limestone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh-slate roof. It has a long main range with short returns and stands two storeys high.
The front has 16 windows, with chamfered rusticated ashlar quoins. At the first floor, there are 2-light stone-mullioned windows that rise from an ashlar band, some of which still have leaded casements. The ground floor features a group of three wide segmental-arched openings in bays 10, 11, and 12, which have linked impost blocks and projecting keyblocks, likely from the 18th century. The bays on the left contain alternating stable doors with overlights and moulded stone surrounds, as well as tall stone-mullioned windows with transoms and leaded glazing. The bays on the right have similar openings, but the stone mullions have been removed.
The hipped roof extends to short wings at both ends. The rear of the building retains at least one mullioned window but also has later openings and is partly concealed. Inside, the roofs feature butt-purlins. One stone door surround has a small scratched inscription reading "II 1778," although this is unlikely to pertain to the building's construction or alterations. The Stables were originally associated with Over Norton House, which was demolished and rebuilt in 1875.
