Description

Witts Farmhouse is a late 17th and early 18th century farmhouse, altered around 1800. It is constructed of squared limestone, with some ashlar dressings and wooden lintels, and has a concrete plain-tile roof, topped by gable stacks built of ashlar and brick. The building is arranged around a central staircase, with a later parallel range added to the rear. The farmhouse has two storeys plus an attic, and sits on a semi-basement.

The front of the farmhouse is symmetrical, with three windows. It originally had five windows, altered around 1800, and retains blocked narrow windows on both floors. There are stone-mullioned windows in the cellar, and a moulded string that continues around the end walls. The windows on the upper floors are 16-pane sashes, and the window above the central doorway is a 12-pane sash. The steeply pitched roof has two gabled dormers, and the stacks have a plinth with a moulded cap and renewed diagonal brick shafts.

The rear range is shorter and contains three large, transomed three-light casements on each floor, most of which have renewed frames.

Inside, there is a 17th century dogleg staircase rising to the attic; it features barleytwist balusters and a moulded handrail. The cellars are vaulted, with two chamfered stone doorways.
