Description

This is a memorial pump, dating to circa 1864. Constructed from limestone ashlar and polished pink granite, with a copper pump, iron fixings, and railings, the monument has a triangular plan. Three circular limestone columns, each topped with flower capitals, support semicircular arches forming an ogee-roofed limestone canopy. A stone cross sits at the canopy’s apex, and elaborate brackets with scrolls, entablatures, and ball finials project from the angles. A vault extends downwards to a central turned granite column with a volute capital, featuring pendentives decorated with shields commemorating the deaths of Colonel and Mrs. Henry Dawkins in 1864. The pump is attached to the central column, supported by elaborate wrought-iron supports. Cast-iron railings extend from the central column, enclosing part of the surrounding area. The monument is included on the list for its group value.
